Operator vs. Hire

By Mike Reardon

A Full-Time Revenue Leader and a Contract Operator Do the Same Work.

The incentive is opposite.

An employee is paid to keep running it. Their paycheck depends on the system needing them. Over time, the best ones become the single point of failure — and buyers price that in. It’s called the key-person discount.

Key-person discount: the discount a buyer applies when the business depends on one person being there — typically 15–25% of enterprise value.

A contract operator is paid to make the business not need him. The deliverable is the handoff. The exit is the proof.

One builds a person you can’t lose. The other builds an asset you get to keep.

Quick Test

If your revenue person stepped away for 90 days, what would the forecast do?

If the answer is “fall apart,” you have a person, not a system.

The system is its own page: The Revenue Operating System. And the handoff starts as a document you own either way: the Revenue Blueprint.

Mike installs and runs the revenue operating system most companies never built, for founder-led firms between $5M and $50M. He maps where revenue leaks across strategy, operations, and performance, then fixes it so growth stops depending on heroics.

Find Your Revenue Leak

Most owners are already paying for the gap. The only question is whether they've measured it. A Blueprint surfaces where your revenue leaks, in about two weeks.
