Engagement  1985–1987 (2.5 years) Branch sales operator & team lead Mike Reardon

Engaged to lead a branch of five technical staff at an electronic components distributor, a branch ranked ninth out of the company’s regional branches when I arrived. The team was skilled. The technical knowledge was deep. What was missing was the way that knowledge translated into customer conversations.

Used the same system to research, identify, and engage the right buyers. The lesson that produced the outcome: transforming technical people into effective sales people came from engagement, not from sales training alone. Each person brought a different angle to a customer conversation, and the customer mix was scaled around what each person genuinely brought to it.

Outcome $1M+ in revenue across the engagement. Branch ranking moved from ninth to second, and the Best Branch Improvement award.

Lesson That Travels

“Transforming technical people into sales people comes from engagement, not from skills training alone. The right person, properly engaged, outperforms a more skilled person who is not bought in.”

Why This Matters to You

Engaging employees is sometimes more important than the skills they were originally hired for. The discipline starts with how the team is engaged, not with what the team is taught. The branch’s technical knowledge was already there. The system that turned it into revenue was the missing piece.
